Sanakham hydropower project submitted to the MRC

On 09 September 2019, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat received notification from the National Mekong Committee of Lao PDR submitting the Sanakham Hydropower Project (SNHPP) for Prior Consultation (PC) under the Procedures for Notification, Prior Consultation and Agreement (PNPCA). I’ve just finished reading Last Days of the Mighty Mekong (Asian Arguments) by Brian Eyler. I recommend it as a primer for anyone looking to learn more about the broader perspective of the Mekong. New Analysis of the XePian-XeNamnoy Saddle Dam D Collapse

The authors’ analysis is excellent, especially since the project did not accept their requests for access or information. They correctly predicted that 2 of the other saddle dams may face similar instability. We have seen that repair and upgrade work on those other saddle dams is also being carried out. Luang Prabang Project Announced

Mekong River Commission has released the project documents for the proposed Luang Prabang Hydropower Project on the Mekong River which is set to start construction in 2020. This kicks off the 6-month Prior Consultation Period, which involves technical evaluation and public consultation by the member countries.
