I’ve just finished reading Last Days of the Mighty Mekong (Asian Arguments) by Brian Eyler. I recommend it as a primer for anyone looking to learn more about the broader perspective of the Mekong.

The author is suggesting that the future of the Mekong is dire. I do agree that we have to look at all the parts of the river as connected to one system with hydropower in Laos is one part of that system. However, I am more optimistic than the author. Interspersed in the book are stories of successful individuals and communities that are taking responsibility for their own future. The way I see it change is inevitable (both river use and climate change) and it’s up to everyone to make that change for the better. Cooperation, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking are key to the continuity of the Mekong and improvement of the lives of those who depend on it.
